What he actually means is if the US changes and as a symptom of that change it is no longer aligned with Israel but with Islamic values, then sure. He says the one thing to mean the other. It’s like when Xi in the most positive way says China should be the US’ friend, he actually means the US is not China’s friend, that they’re choosing to not be China’s friend and that is on them. Iran is saying US can choose to be Islamic and then we may be good, depending on whether they’re the right of Islam but still better.

My brother in law drove through Iran. He told me people would chase them down in there cars, insist on taking them to their homes to have food and hold their babies. He showed me photos of him in cafes , he had about 30 cigarettes lined up in front of him, everyone there would gift him a cigarette to welcome him, he doesn’t smoke, he said their hospitality was beautiful.

I recall an episode of Anthony Bourdain's travel show where he visited Iran and had a great time.  It was full of welcoming people and good food... like every episode.

People are people.  We all, mostly, have societies built around hospitality and scrumptious food.  Why would Iran be any different?

I'm an American though, and I'm in the military.  So I remember a core tenet of American policy, dislike of a foreign government doesn't mean the people of that country are the enemy.  In non-democratic nations, it's important to remember, "Oppose the regime, not the people."

I have no ill will towards Persians.  They seem so interesting, and full of promise.  I would love to see them rise up, topple the theocrats, and take their place as a leader in the international world.  Every time a protest movement kicks off, I hold my breath, hoping to visit Tehran in friendship soon.

But they sew sinister seeds of chaos in the region, and I'm not going to deny being pleased that their influence has been curtailed by US action.  Just because we're meddling bastards in the region, doesn't make Iran heroic.  Fuck the ayatollah.  Fuck their disregard of Arab lives.

BTW, I like that Iran and the US were, for a minute, on the same side in Syria, in the sense that they opposed ISIS.  [I remember a night, sometime after an ISIS attack in Iran, when Iran responded by launching missiles against the last pocket of ISIS territory.](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Strike_of_Muharram)  I felt the blast waves from the attack, and was confused, because there was obviously a big strike nearby.  As I scrolled through the mIRC chat (yes, the military uses IRC chatrooms to pass info) I found a message I'd missed, which warned that Iran had just launch ballistic missiles at ISIS in retaliation.

That was just another funny experience being involved in the clusterfuck of that was that region at that time.  The other includes Russia jamming our comms and now defeated Syrian forces picking up the slack from their side of the Euphrates whenever we let up on the bombardment of Hajin.  We didn't coordinate shit, but they clearly wanted to maintain the pressure on those bastards whenever we were in a lull.  Poor radar platoon from 65th Fires had to spend a lot of downtime watching radar reports of Syrian arty fucking up Hajin to screen for the potential IDF attacks on us.

I have had Persian coworkers, and they referred to themselves as such, and they were the coolest people I've ever known. Kind, generous, welcoming and always having a good time. They also drink like... A lot. Lol. Quite shocking to me, I wouldn't have guessed. 

Very family oriented and they made me feel completely at home when I visited. 

I moved on career wise and so did they, but we still chat and I love hearing from them.

It might be because I met them in a work context, but the Iranians I’ve met were very intelligent and practical in their thinking. I’ve never been to Iran, so most of what I know about the country comes from the media, which is somewhat negative. Especially here in Korea, the negative impression has grown stronger in recent years. Personally, I also feel a bit sorry that they gave up the incredibly cool name “Persia.” Haha.
